The understatement of the hairpins legs on this style of table works really well to allow the beauty of the walnut stand out on it’s own.

We love flaws and we love cracks. These natural aspects of a wood slab tells a story and adds interest. Much like every gray hair, wrinkle or scare defines who we are – the natural “flaws” in a tree should be celebrated. The crack or “check” in this slab was accentuated by the kiln drying process and the rapid release of moisture from the pours of the tree. However, it was likely there in the form of a minor stress fracture from it’s lifespan. Many would cut this out but we’d rather include this in a new life we create for these trees.

Most of the slabs we acquire have so-called “flaws” but don’t we all have a few “flaws”? These trees have also seen many more seasons than we have.

In this particular instance we’ve chosen to fill and stabilize the check with epoxy resin. The varnish is a clear matte finish which doesn’t shift the natural colour of the walnut. The Midcentury Modern style emphasizes simple and natural forms as well as natural materials. There’s a feeling of seamless flow between indoors and outdoors. With it’s organic curves it embodies functional comfort through a thoughtful connection between the natural and the man-made. This simple and eclectic style is why it is so timeless and appealing today.
